Why plastic, not metal, for water treatment

Metal valves fail in water treatment for predictable reasons: chlorinated and dosing chemicals corrode them, chloride pitting and stress-corrosion cracking attack stainless steel in seawater and brine, and scale builds on rough metal bores. Engineered thermoplastics avoid all three. They are chemically inert to the chlorine, hypochlorite, coagulants, acids, and alkalis that treatment plants run every day; they are immune to chloride-induced corrosion; their smooth bore resists scaling and biofilm; and they cost a fraction of exotic alloys while weighing far less, which cuts support and installation cost. The trade-off is temperature and mechanical limits, which is why the material is chosen per duty rather than by default.

Which material for which treatment chemical

Most of the decision comes down to the dosing and process chemistry. Wastewater and effluent treatment

Municipal and industrial wastewater is aggressive and variable — hydrogen sulfide, chlorine, ferric coagulants, and caustic all in one plant, often carrying solids. Plastics resist the corrosion and the H₂S that destroys concrete and metal, and diaphragm valves handle slurry and solids-laden lines without clogging. UPVC and PPH cover most duties; butterfly valves suit the large main lines.

Seawater desalination (RO)

Reverse-osmosis and seawater service is where plastic’s biggest advantage shows: unlike stainless steel, thermoplastics do not suffer chloride pitting or stress-corrosion cracking, so they last in seawater, brine, and reject streams. They also handle the antiscalant, acid and caustic CIP cycles, and hypochlorite dosing typical of RO plants. UPVC and CPVC serve feed and permeate lines; PVDF covers the most aggressive cleaning chemistry.

Industrial process water

DI and RO feed, cooling water, rinse lines, and process make-up water all benefit from a smooth, inert, non-scaling bore. UPVC and CPVC are the workhorses here, with pneumatic actuation for automated batch and rinse control — the duty behind our featured project below.

Swimming pool and disinfection systems

Pool and aquatic systems run chlorine and sodium hypochlorite for disinfection and acid for pH, exactly the chemistry UPVC and CPVC are built for. Corrosion-free operation and easy solvent-weld installation make plastic the standard here.

Chemical dosing systems

Dosing skids are where material choice is most critical, because each metering line carries a different concentrated chemical — hypochlorite, sulfuric acid, caustic, coagulant, antiscalant. Match the material to each chemical from the table above, use diaphragm or true-union ball valves for precise metering and isolation, and add pneumatic actuators for PLC-controlled batch dosing. Valve types for water treatment

Four valve types cover almost every treatment duty. Ball valves — especially true-union designs — handle isolation and on/off service on dosing skids and process lines. Butterfly valves suit large main lines and tank isolation. Diaphragm valves are the choice for throttling, precise dosing, and solids- or slurry-laden streams. And pneumatic actuation turns any of these into an automated, PLC-controlled valve for batch dosing and remote isolation.

Project spotlight

Malaysia — pure-water and electroplating facility, 2024. Huiya supplied a PN16 (16 kg) UPVC pressure-piping system with 86 UPVC pneumatic true-union ball valves (DN50, double-acting actuators, ~1.2 s 90° actuation at 6 bar air) for RO feed-water isolation and electroplating bath-liquid switching. Integrated with the plant’s PLC for automated batch control, the system reached a 99.3% batch pass rate.

PVC or PVDF for water treatment?
